1. Accessing Stairs
Many people with mobility impairments—including the elderly—experience difficulty accessing stairs. Some may manage with the support of simple handrails, and others with strong upper body strength (such as some wheelchair users) may have developed techniques to navigate stairs independently, but this is not possible for everyone. For many, especially those using mobility aids like wheelchairs, scooters, or walkers, additional assistance is necessary. Fortunately, there is a wide variety of Lifts, Ramps, and Transfer Aids available to help them safely and efficiently navigate stairs—whether at home, work, or in public spaces.

Stair Lifts are available with a wide variety of different features, such as an adjustable seat height, battery isolation switches, call stations, ‘flip-up’ rail, key switch, folding step, speed governor, seat belt, soft start and soft stop. For sufficiently wide stairs, a rail is mounted to the treads of the stairs and a chair or lifting platform is attached to the rail.
A person on the chair or platform is lifted in the chair along the rail.
These Stair Lifts are available from Sitwell Technologies, in a variety of different styles – and can be customised to suit your home.

iv) Elevators or Lifts

An Elevator or Lift is a type of vertical transportation that moves people between floors of a home or apartment, where wheelchair ramps and the other equipment listed above would be impractical.
Elevators are generally powered by electric motors that either drive traction cables or counterweight systems.
Elevators or Lifts are available in different sizes, finishes and colours to match the design of any home and include products such as:
B. Ramps
Ramps come in a variety of types, sizes and shapes: Long and Short, Roll-Up, Telescopic, Folding or Solid. They can be built out of wood, cement or metal. Their parameters dependant on location, your Home, your Wheelchair or Scooter, the size needed and your physical abilities.
Ramps must be carefully designed in order to be useful. A less steep rise is easier for a wheelchair user to navigate, as well as safer. The Ramp should also be wide enough to navigate easily, with lips on the sides for added safety.
The South African National Standard for Building Regulations state that Wheelchair ramps (or other ways for wheelchair users to access a building, such as a wheelchair lift) are required in the new construction for public buildings in South Africa. They also state that these wheelchair Lifts and Ramps must meet certain regulations and requirements. Any ramp provided in terms of this part of SANS 10400 shall have a gradient, measured along the centre line, that is not steeper than 1:12.) These specification are good guide for personal ramps as well.

Some can fit neatly under a wheelchair, removing the need for the person using the wheelchair to be lifted out of their wheelchair, thereby reducing the risk of injury to both carers and patient.
This equipment if available from Sitwell Technologies, and includes products such as:
2. Hoists, Patient Lifters, Slings, Etc.
A Hoist or Patient Lift is an assistive device that is used to transfer persons with Mobility Impairments between a bed and a wheelchair or other similar places. Most hoists are Hydraulic or Electric Powered, these include Wheeled Lifts, which are mobile, Wall Lifts, which are mounted to the wall, or Ceiling Lifts, which are suspended from the ceiling & are mounted or can run on overhead tracks.
All of these Hoists require some way to connect you safely to the Hoist, so that you can move from point A to point B, they include:
i) The Sling Lift & Sling
ii) SureHands® Body Support
iii) A Sit-To-Stand Lift.

a) Sling Lifts
The Sling Lift has several advantages, it allows heavy patients to be transferred while decreasing stress on caregivers and reducing the number of nursing staff required to move patients – it also reduces the chance of injury from lifting patients.
Patients who have medical conditions that do not allow them to be bent and compressed by the sling as they are hoisted (i.e., cannot withstand “vertical transfer”) will require specialized slings which can lift horizontally, or use other assistive devices for transferring.
The other types of transfer device which allows for lateral transfer are stretcher chairs (also called transfer or convertible chairs) that allow patients to be slid or dragged from the bed onto a mobile stretcher that then converts into a mobile chair, and inflatable sliding mats which use air bearing technology to reduce friction during lateral transfer. Other less expensive alternatives are disposable or washable Sliding Sheets/Draw Sheets and Sliding Boards. See Draw Sheets below.
There are also various types of other Slings that are available to purchase in South Africa, these can be purchased from companies such as Sitwell Technologies, Sheer Mobility, Pro Mobility, Mobility Aids and Solutions Medical.

c) Hoists
There are various other types of hoists that are available in to purchase in South Africa these include the The Sit-To-Stand Lift or hoist, Wheeled Hoists, which are mobile, Wall Lifts, which are mounted to the wall, or Ceiling Lifts, which are suspended from the ceiling and are mounted or can run on overhead tracks.
These hoists are available in different types from various companies, they include:
i) The Sit-To-Stand Lift

The Sit-To-Stand Lift is designed to help patients who have some mobility but who lack the strength or muscle control to rise unaided into a standing position from a bed, wheelchair, chair, or commode.
Sit-To-Stand Lifts use straps, vests, or belts (as opposed to slings) to make the transition possible.
There are various types of these Sit-To-Stand Lifts which are available to purchase in South Africa including:
ii) Wheeled Hoists
A Wheeled Hoist is free-standing. It supports the person being moved in a sling or harness that is suspended from a cantilevered arm. The sling is placed around the person while he or she is seated or lying down. The person is then hoisted up and the hoist is wheeled to the new location, where the person is then lowered down.
One of the first things to consider when purchasing a Wheeled Hoist is the amount of manoeuvring space a wheeled hoist needs. The wheeled base of the hoist must be wide enough to remain stable with the person in it. It usually requires a wide and unobstructed path of travel, this is at least 1,100 mm (43 1/2 in.) and possibly more if turns are required.
Another design consideration is clear space under furniture and fixtures, to accommodate the frame of the hoist. If a wheeled hoist is to be used for transfers in and out of a bathtub, the bathtub should have legs or be raised from the floor so that the hoist frame will fit under the bathtub.
There are various types of Wheeled Hoists, including:

There are a variety of these kind of Hoists available in South Africa, that can be purchased from companies such as Sitwell Technologies, Sheer Mobility, Pro Mobility, Mobility Aids and Solutions Medical. Or If you prefer to rent, please contact: Pro Mobility, Solutions Medical and Mobility Aids or visit our Equipment to Hire page
iii) Wall Mounted Lifts

Wall Mounted Lifts are stationary hoists which are mounted to the wall, the base of the hoist is fixed and a support arm pivots to transfer the person sideways.
These hoists generally use a sling or harness similar to that of a wheeled hoist.
An important consideration for a stationary hoist is the structural strength of the wall it is attached to, the advice of a structural engineer is very important.
Other considerations include the arc of the hoist swing (ensure it reaches the necessary elements) and making sure that clear space is available for the wheelchair during the transfer to and from the hoist. There are various types of these Wall Mounted Lifts available in South Africa, including:
There are various types of Hoists available in South Africa, from companies such as Sitwell Technologies, Solutions Medical and Pro Mobility, please contact them to find out more. Most of these companies can also service & repair the products they sell.
If you prefer to rent please contact Pro Mobility, Solutions Medical and Mobility Aids, or visit our Equipment to Hire page to find out more.
iv) Ceiling Lifts
A”Ceiling Lift” can be permanently installed on the ceiling of a room in order to save space. A Wheeled Hoist has a wheeled base that requires additional space on the side of the patient’s bed during transfer. The Ceiling Lift eliminates this space issue because the patient is supported by ceiling tracks instead of by the wheeled base. It can support “A Sling Lift” and “SureHands® Body Support” There are a variety of products available and each differ slightly.
Ceiling Lifts usually have a “track system” attached to the ceiling for horizontal movement of the patient within the patient’s room & often into an adjoining bathroom. Ceiling Lifts also use an overhead electric motor (i.e., they are not hydraulic) They are controlled by a hand-held set of push buttons to raise & lower the patient. In most cases, the same overhead motor is used to move the patient horizontally, but such movement is limited by the placement of the overhead ceiling track system.
There are various types of Ceiling Lifts available on the market today, a few of which are featured below:

For extra strength and weight capacity of up to 600 pounds, they are a great choice.

Transfer Boards are an excellent tool when learning to transfer and are often used as a support preventing overuse syndrome in the shoulders. Transfer Boards enable a individual to slide from one surface to another, across the board instead of having to lift their full body weight.
