At Disability Info South Africa (DiSA), we believe that accessibility is the foundation of inclusion. Without Universal Access, many individuals with disabilities are excluded from opportunities to learn, work, travel, and participate fully in society.

Inclusion is not just about laws and policies, it is about creating accessible environments, awareness and understanding to ensure that everyone can thrive.

Universal Access refers to the principle that everyone should be able to access, use, and benefit from environments, services, products, and information, regardless of their age, disability, or circumstances.

It is based on the idea of inclusivity and equal opportunities, ensuring that no one is excluded due to physical, sensory, cognitive, or social barriers. To create a world that is usable and welcoming for all people, without the need for adaptation or specialized design.

A Universal Access Consultant is a professional who specializes in assessing, advising, and guiding the design of environments, services, and systems such as Buildings and spaces; Transport; Information, communication and Technology, to ensure they are accessible and inclusive for everyone.

2. Accessible Cities – Accessibility Specialists

Accessible Cities-South Africa (AC-SA) is a DiSA initiative formed to create awareness for the need for inclusive environments and showcases various “Access Specialists” and partnerships that we have formed and work with to promote and help build a truly Accessible South Africa for all persons with disabilities.

Access specialists are professionals, companies and organisations who help make buildings, spaces, and services easier for everyone to use and/or prov. They check if places are accessible, suggest improvements like ramps or wider doors, and make sure everything meets accessibility laws and standards.

3. Awareness Training

Awareness Training also known as Sensitization Training or Disability Conscious Training aims to equip organisations, businesses, and communities with the knowledge and tools they require to create inclusive environments within the workplace. They provide practical insights, expert guidance, and actionable strategies to help participants promote accessibility, inclusion, and disability rights within their company.

DiSA offers an extensive Accessibility Toolkit designed to enable individuals with disabilities to reach their full potential. he DISA News Network (DNN), where we aim to Inspire, Educate, Entertain and Empower all persons with disabilities to live their lives to the fullest potential and then celebrate their achievements.

5. Yes to Access – Discrimination Complaints

Disability Info South Africa (DiSA) offers a Complaints and Reporting Platform to empower individuals with disabilities and their families by addressing accessibility issues, discrimination complaints, or lack of equality.

This platform gives users the tool to report challenges they encounter and provides possible solutions on who can assist.
