Neurological Impairments
Welcome to the Neurological Impairments section, developed to empower persons living with neurological impairments or disabilities by connecting them with reliable information, resources, and support to help them live their best possible lives.
Neurological impairments are conditions or disorders that affect the brain, spinal cord, or peripheral nervous system. These conditions can result in partial or complete changes to physical movement, sensory processing, communication, behaviour, or cognitive functioning, depending on which areas of the nervous system are affected.
Neurological impairments may be present at birth (congenital), develop as a result of illness, injury, or degenerative disease – or occur later in life following events such as stroke, infection, or traumatic injury. While their causes and effects vary widely, all neurological impairments stem from differences or damage within the nervous system.
Conditions such as Epilepsy, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease are classified as neurological impairments. These conditions are not a reflection of intelligence, but rather differences in how the brain and nervous system function and process information.
