1. Scooters and Shopriders
Mobility scooters are electrically powered vehicles designed to assist individuals with limited mobility. They offer an ideal solution for people who struggle with stamina or endurance, but still retain some mobility—specifically those who can stand and walk a few steps, sit upright without additional torso support, and have adequate use of their arms for steering and control.
These scooters are particularly beneficial for individuals living with certain medical conditions, including coronary or pulmonary (lung) diseases, some forms of arthritis, obesity, partial paralysis (such as some paraplegics), limb amputations, and age-related mobility challenges. For many, mobility scooters represent a means of maintaining independence and participating in daily activities with greater ease.

Types of Scooters and Shopriders
There are 3 main types of Mobility Scooters on the market today: Lightweight, Medium and Heavy Duty. Each of these is available with either 3 or 4 wheels. Which one is best suited for you depends on your lifestyle requirements, your level of mobility and of course your budget. The table below should help you refine your decision making, before proceeding to the specifics of which exact model you prefer.
1. Lightweight Foldable Scooters

Wheelchairs – the Essential Mobility Aid
Wheelchairs are essential mobility aids for individuals who experience difficulty walking or are unable to walk due to illness, injury, or disability. They come in a wide range of types and configurations, including manually propelled, caregiver-assisted, electrically powered, or hybrid (power-assist) models. Many also feature customizations for comfort, positioning, and activity-specific use.
When first injured, the choices can be overwhelming. But the only real consideration, is which is the right wheelchair FOR YOU. Below is a breakdown of the choices available. Please consider them carefully. Selecting the wrong wheelchair can result in discomfort, reduced independence, and even health complications such as pressure sores or joint strain. If you are unsure, ask for help …
Choosing the right wheelchair for you is a highly personal decision. and not one to be taken lightly. This decision should be based on several key factors, including:

How to Choose the Right Wheelchair for You!

Choosing the right wheelchair for you starts with understanding your physical needs, your lifestyle requirements, and consideration of your daily routines. Here are a few basic considerations to help you make the right decision for you:
Your lifestyle affects both the type and configuration of your wheelchair. So sit and ask yourself:
– Do you need to travel often, load your chair into a car, or live in a small space? → Folding is easier.
– Do you spend most of your day in your chair? → Rigid or customized comfort features may matter more.
– Do you navigate uneven or outdoor terrain? → Consider more customized options like terrain-ready power chairs.
– Are you an active user who needs efficiency, speed, and durability → you will likely prefer rigid, manual
– Or will you mostly be requiring the chair all day indoors and outdoors → might need power + customised
Manual vs Power Wheelchairs: Let’s Break it Down

Step 1: Manual vs Power > The first primary distinction to make is power versus manual.
Manual wheelchairs are best suited for individuals with sufficient upper body strength and endurance, who can propel themselves.
Power wheelchairs are generally best for those who have limited or no ability to self-propel a manual wheelchair, or who require features like enhanced comfort, terrain navigation, and extended use.
2. Folding vs Rigid Wheelchairs

Folding vs Rigid Frames
This applies to both manual and power chairs, but it’s more critical in manual chairs due to the need for frequent transport. In power chairs, the decision still matters — though fewer models are foldable, and disassembly or transport may require a vehicle lift.
Folding versus Rigid: Which One is Best for You?
Choose a Folding Wheelchair if …
– You need a portable chair that folds easily for travel or transport
– You have limited storage space
– You require frequent transfers into cars or narrow indoor spaces
– You want adjustable features with moderate performance
Choose a Rigid Wheelchair if …
– You are a long-term or full-time wheelchair user
– You value lightweight, responsive, and energy-efficient design
– You engage in sports, outdoor, or high-performance activities
– You want advanced customization and modern materials

1. Manual Wheelchairs
A basic manual wheelchair typically includes a seat, footrests, and four wheels: two small front caster wheels and two large rear wheels fitted with hand rims that allow the user to propel the chair forward. Most models also feature push handles at the top of the backrest for assistance from a caregiver or companion.
To meet a wide range of individual needs, manual wheelchairs are available in two main types—rigid and folding—each offering a variety of customization options. These include adjustments to Limb, neck, or head support, seat dimensions, height and angle, adjustable footrests and leg rests, anti-tip bars or wheels, and safety belts and postural supports.
A wide range of accessories is also available, including wheelchair bags, trays/tables, mounts for crutches or oxygen tanks, drink holders, and clothing protectors. Visit our Accessories page to explore available options.
Types of Manual Wheelchairs
1. Rigid Wheelchairs
Rigid Wheelchairs are increasingly preferred by active users, they have permanently welded joints & fewer moving parts, which reduces the energy required to push the wheelchair by eliminating points where the wheelchair would flex as it moves. Welding the joints also reduces the overall weight of the chair. Rigid chairs typically feature instant-release rear wheels and backrests that fold down flat, allowing the user to dismantle the chair quickly for storage in a car. To find out more, visit Transferring & Loading Wheelchair Into A Vehicle
There are a wide variety of different types of these Rigid Wheelchairs, some are now made from ultralight materials such as aircraft aluminium, titanium or Carbon Fiber. Some of these wheelchairs also include Accessories that can be purchased with the wheelchair or added to the chair later. They include products such as: “Loopwheels Wheels”, “Soft Wheels”, “Off-Road Wheels” or “Polymer Shock Absorbers”, which cushion the bumps over which the chair rolls. Shock Absorbers may be added to the front wheels or to the rear wheels, or both. Other products include the “Icon Nu Drive Lever Propulsion” which can be fitted to your wheelchair, as an alternative to pushing. (Visit our Spares & Accessories section to find out more.

2. Folding Wheelchairs
Folding Wheelchairs are easier to transport, these wheelchairs can also be light & can be folded for storage, or placement into a vehicle. They are generally used for lighter people, who are less active & do not jump pavements, or go up & down steps, by avoiding these activities will help the chair to last longer. Some Folding Wheelchairs are often cheaper like those used by hospitals, doctors rooms, shopping centres, etc.

Standing Wheelchairs

Standing Wheelchairs, also known as Standing Chair, are similar to a Standing Frame, which allows a wheelchair user to raise the chair from a seated to a standing position. The standing wheelchair supports the person in a standing position and enables interaction with people and objects at eye level.
Standing wheelchairs can be manually operated, have power-operated wheels but manual lifting mechanisms or be fully powered with, for example, hydraulic lifting mechanisms. Some standing wheelchairs can be driven from the standing position, however there is some medical concern of an increased risk of long bone fractures while driving due to the legs being under a heavy load.
Used to achieve regular mobility and to stand the person up using hydraulics, Standing wheelchairs are used by people with mild to severe disabilities including: spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, stroke, post-polio syndrome and more.
Despite the above mentioned concerns, studies have shown evidence that standing wheelchairs help improve circulation, urinary health, bowel function and bone density. There are a variety of different types of Manual Standing Wheelchairs available in South Africa, including:
Available from: CE Mobility, Mobility Aids, Pro Mobility, be-Able Solutions and Wheelchairs on the Run.
Available Second hand from: Sitwell, be-Able Solutions and Shoprider

Tilting Wheelchairs have seating surfaces which can be tilted to various angles. The original concept was developed by an orthotist who worked with children with disabilities and observed that postural deformities such as scoliosis could be supported or partially corrected by allowing the wheelchair user to relax in a tilted position.
When tilting a Wheelchair, the seat-back, seat base, and leg rests tilt back as one unit, similar to the way a person might tip a four-legged chair backwards to balance it on the back legs.
Tilting wheelchairs are preferred by people who use moulded or contoured seats, who need to maintain a particular posture, they are commonly used by persons with cerebral palsy, muscle diseases, or limited range of motion in the hip or knee joints.
Tilting options are more common than reclining options in wheelchairs designed for use by children, or for those who need to keep a communication device, powered wheelchair controls, or other attached device in the same relative position throughout the day. The feature is also of value to users who are unable to sit upright for extended periods for pain or other reasons.
Manual Tilting Wheelchairs for adults are available from various companies in South Africa and include products such as:

Available for purchase from: CE Mobility, Mobility Aids, Sitwell, Solutions Medical, Pro Mobility, be-Able Solutions & Wheelchairs on the Run
Available Second hand from: Sitwell, be-Able Solutions and Shoprider
Available for Rent from: Mobility Aids, Solutions Medical, Pro Mobility, Wheelchairs on the Run and be-Able Solutions

Reclining Manual Wheelchairs

Reclining Wheelchairs allows the use to recline the backrest down at different angles, while the seat base remains in the same position. When fully reclined, it spreads the person’s weight over the entire back side of the body, in some chairs the leg rests can also be raised, while some reclining wheelchairs lean back far enough that the user can lie down completely flat.
Reclining wheelchairs are preferred in some medical cases, reducing the risk of pressure sores, providing passive movement of hip and knee joints, and making it easier to perform some nursing procedures, such as intermittent catheterization to empty the bladder and transfers to beds. These Wheelchairs are also useful when visiting the dentist or for people who may want to take a “nap” in their Wheelchair.
The use of reclining wheelchairs is particularly common among people with spinal cord injuries such as quadriplegics. Their are various types of Manual Reclining Wheelchairs available including:
Available from: CE Mobility, Mobility Aids, Solutions Medical, Pro Mobility, Sitwell, WINFAR, be-Able Solutions, WINFAR, Wheelchairs on the Run

Off-Road and All-Terrain Manual Wheelchairs
Off-Road or All-Terrain Wheelchairs allow persons with disabilities to access terrain otherwise completely inaccessible to a wheelchair user. There are a variety of different types of these Wheelchairs including Wheelchairs used for everyday use and Wheelchairs that have been developed for sports and activities. All Terrain Wheelchairs enable persons with disabilities to enjoy sports and activities such as Mountain Biking and going to the beach. There are a variety of Manual Beach wheelchairs designed to travel on beach, into the water, on uneven terrain, or even on snow.

3. Power-assist and Motorized Wheelchairs
For many years there were only three types of Wheelchairs available to persons with Mobility Impairments in South Africa: Scooters, Manual Wheelchairs, and Motorized Wheelchairs. Then, more recently a fourth option became available Power-assist Wheelchairs. Power Assist Wheelchairs offer a combination of Manual and Motorized Wheelchairs. This is what you need to know:
Power-Assist Wheelchairs
A wheelchair power add-on or power assist is particularly well suited for people who are unable to walk but who can independently operate a manual wheelchair. A power add-on ‘upgrades’ any standard wheelchair, reducing the effort required to propel a wheelchair. Increasing independence and ability to navigate obstacles, traverse thresholds, carpets, inclines and other obstacles with greater ease.
Wheelchair power add-on devices provide a functional and less expensive alternative to motorized wheelchair – especially for people who are still able to use manual wheelchairs. And can easily be removed from the chair when needed for transport or manual control is perferred.
With power-assist chairs, power is either delivered directly through an auxiliary drive wheel, integrated with the hub of hand-propelled wheels, so that any force on the pushrims is magnified by the drive system. Or mounted under the wheelchair and controlled as with a Power Wheelchair, with the motive force either transmitted to the main wheels via a friction drive system.
There are a variety of Power-Assist devices available on the market today, including:
Types of Power Assist Wheelchairs

The SmartDrive
The SmartDrive is a revolutionary new power assist device, which clips easily onto your Manual Wheelchair. You tap the push-rim and the SmartDrive accelerates, tap again and it maintains that speed until you brake by simply tapping twice. Weighing less than 6kg’s, the SmartDrive is easy to install and transport and can be fitted to rigid or folding wheelchairs.
It is believed that the use of this device may reduce the frequency of upper limb injuries & allow an individual to use a manual wheelchair for a longer period of time. It is significantly easier for individuals to propel on carpets, dimple strips, up a ramp, as well as up curbs. Individuals report that it provided relief when fatigued & that the wheelchair went faster resulting in accomplishing more in the day. It also gives higher comfort & easier propulsion as compared to a normal manual wheelchair.
The Alber E-Motion M25 Power Drive
The e-motion is designed to provide a simple solution and provide power assistance for your everyday life. The drive wheels by Alber can combine perfectly with almost any wheelchair using two discrete adapters. While moving, sensors built into the push-rims measure your drive movement and provide you with the desired motor power.
The Alber E-Motion M25 Power Drive offers extra power and a lighter weight in comparison to the previous model.
Delivering a support speed of up to 8.5 km/h and a range of up to 25 km.
Each wheel weighs only 7.8 kg, A 33% reduction from the M15 and is now available in three wheel sizes, 22″, 24″ and 26″. It is ideal for active individuals looking for a powerful and versatile mobility solution to suit a busy lifestyle.

Motorized Wheelchairs
Motorized Wheelchairs, also known as Electric Wheelchairs or Powerchairs, are generally four-wheeled or six-wheeled and can be folding or non-folding. There are four general styles of Power Chair drive systems: Front wheel drive; Centre; Rear and all-wheel drive.
A basic Motorized Wheelchair incorporates a seat, backrest, foot rests and four wheels: two caster wheels at the front and two slightly larger wheels at the back, which may also have anti-tilt wheels.
The powered wheels are typically somewhat larger than the castor wheels and the castor wheels on a Motorized Wheelchair are typically larger than the castors on a Manual Wheelchair.
Motorized Wheelchairs also have two motors on the rear wheels, with a Wheel lock and two push handles at the top of the backrest to allow for manual propulsion by a second person.
Centre wheel drive Motorized Wheelchairs have castors at both front & rear for a six-wheel layout.
These Wheelchairs also include a Controller with a joystick and a battery pack with batteries.
Everyone is unique and has unique needs, Motorized Wheelchairs are therefore often customized for the user’s needs. These customizations include: different types of Controllers, Backrests, seat dimensions, height, seat angle, footrests, leg rests, head rests and safety belts.
Some Wheelchairs also have Accessories such as: Lights and indicators, Wheelchair Bags, Wheelchair Trays/Tables, oxygen tanks, drink holders and more. Visit our Accessories page to learn more about the various Accessories available for Wheelchair users.

Foldable Motorized Wheelchairs

Folding Motorized Wheelchairs are generally lighter, smaller Wheelchairs. Most are more suited for indoor use, and are often referred to as “Indoor Motorized Wheelchairs”. But not all! Some of are in fact suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
Cross-over Foldable Motorized Wheelchairs are sturdy enough to be used outdoors but light enough to be folded and transported in the boot of a car.
Indoor foldable Motorized Wheelchairs are generally narrower and shorter, to enable better manoeuvring around tight corners and the controls are usually simple. Due to the smaller design, the wheelchair is usually less stable outdoors and the tyres are often smoother (once called carpet tyres) to look after the flooring in your home.
Their are various types of Indoor and Crossover Foldable Motorized Wheelchairs available in South Africa including:
Available from: Sheer Mobility, Pro Mobility, Ability Assist, Sitwell, Shoprider, CE Mobility, Mobility Aids, WINFAR, be-Able Solutions, Solutions Medical, Mr Mobility and Wheelchairs on the Run.
Second Hand: Sitwell, be-Able Solutions and Shoprider
Non-Foldable Motorized Wheelchairs
Non Foldable Motorized Wheelchairs are generally sturdier and bigger in design than the Foldable Motorized Wheelchairs.
They are available in various sizes and can usually be used for both indoor and outdoor use. These wheelchairs have a reasonable battery range and fairly grippy tyres which are not as big and knobbly as the tyres on Off-Road Wheelchairs.
Their are various types of these Non-Foldable Motorized Wheelchairs available in South Africa, some are imported, some are manufactured locally. These also include Outdoor Motorized Wheelchairs which have a considerable range, a large wheelbase to help with stability, and large tyres which improve the comfort and handling of the wheelchair. These Outdoor Motorized Wheelchairs also varey considerably and can sometimes be driven indoors. A few examples of non-foldable motorized wheelchairs include:
Available from: Sheer Mobility, Pro Mobility, Ability Assist, Sitwell, Shoprider, CE Mobility, Mobility Aids, Solutions Medical, ShonaquipSE, be-Able Solutions and Wheelchairs on the Run, Most of these companies can also service & repair the Motorized Wheelchairs that they sell
Second Hand: Sitwell, be-Able Solutions and Shoprider
Motorized Bariatric Wheelchairs
Standard Wheelchairs are designed to support no more than 113 kg’s on average. A Bariatric Wheelchair is designed to support larger people and heavier weights. Heavy Duty Motorized Wheelchairs cater to weights any where from 400 lbs. up to 1,000 lbs. and with seat widths up to 48″ and seat depths up to 23″ to accommodate these heavier users.
Also consider: Tilt and Recline, Height Adjustable and Standing features which are not only “Nice To Have” but are also very beneficial to your health. Some designs are too large or heavy for certain wheelchair spaces, cinemas, public transport & wheelchair lifts are frequently designed around a typical manual wheelchair. Motorized Wheelchairs, however, frequently exceed the size and weight limits of manual wheelchairs. This, the layout of your home and the type of transport you use, should also be considered when you buy a wheelchair.
For an example of Motorized Bariatric Wheelchairs please see below or click here to view our Bariatric Assistive Devices section.
These are similar devices are available from: Sitwell, Shoprider, Pro Mobility, Solutions Medical, CE Mobility, Mobility Aids, ShonaquipSE, be-Able Solutions and Wheelchairs on the Run.
Second hand motorized wheelchairs are available from: Sitwell, Wheelchairs on the Run, be-Able Solutions and Shoprider.
Height Adjustable Motorized Wheelchairs

Vertical movement is necessary in order for people to function and participate in a three-dimensional world.
A common intervention that provides vertical mobility within a wheelchair is a seat-elevating device, hence, the provision of a power adjustable seat height (PASH) system.
These Height Adjustable Motorized Wheelchairs are medically necessary as they offer a number of advantages including:
Some examples of Height Adjustable Wheelchairs include:
Tilt and Recline Motorized Wheelchairs
Some Motorized Wheelchairs have a tilt-in-space, or a reclining facility for users who are unable to maintain an upright seating position for long periods. These Motorized tilt-in-space and Recline Wheelchairs work in a similar way and offer the same benefits as the “Tilt and Recline Manual Wheelchairs featured above, except for one primary difference – power versions offer substantially more independence to the user, as they are able to Tilt or Recline electronically without the user asking for assistance.
It is also important to note that Tilt and Recline functionality is not reserved for this particular type of wheelchair only, but also often found in Standing Motorized Wheelchairs and Height Adjustable Motorized Wheelchairs, featured below.
Some examples of Tilt and Recline Motorized Wheelchairs are:

Available from: Sitwell, CE Mobility, Mobility Aids, Pro Mobility, Solutions Medical, be-Able Solutions and Wheelchairs on the Run.

Standing Motorized Wheelchairs

A Standing Wheelchair is one that supports the user in a nearly standing position, they can be used as both a Wheelchair and a Standing Frame, allowing the user to sit or stand in the Wheelchair as they wish.
These Wheelchairs often go from sitting to standing position with a hydraulic pump or electric-powered assist. Some options are provided with a manual propel model & power stand, while others have full power, tilt, recline & variations of other power stand functions. They are available as a rehabilitative medical device and can be found in both Manual and Motorized Wheelchairs.
Certain high-end Motorized Wheelchairs feature a ‘standing’ capability in which either the entire seat elevates to bring the user to standing height or the seat-base, seat-back & leg rests move in conjunction to bring the user into an upright position. The Motorized Wheelchair may or may not be able to move while in the elevated position.
