Pressure Care: Life on a Cushion
Key Considerations when choosing a Pressure Cushion
For 31 years, my wheelchair hasn’t just been a piece of equipment, it’s been my chariot of independence.
As a quadriplegic who at some stages has spent 14 hours a day sitting in a wheelchair, it means one thing: pressure care isn’t optional, it’s survival.
I learned this the hard way. I’ve dealt with multiple pressure sores over the years—some severe enough to require long, difficult stays in hospital. Those experiences changed everything for me. They taught me that what might seem like a small oversight—an ill-suited cushion, poor posture, or skipping pressure relief—can quickly become a serious medical crisis.
Why the correct pressure care cushion matters
When I first started out, I didn’t fully grasp how critical the correct pressure care cushion was. Like many, I thought a cushion was just about comfort. I was wrong. The right cushion is about protecting your skin, preserving your independence, and avoiding the setbacks I’ve had to endure.
Key Considerations when choosing a cushion
Choosing the correct cushion is deeply personal. What works for one person might not work for another. For me, it came down to understanding my body—my pressure points, posture, and level of mobility. A good cushion distributes weight evenly, reduces pressure on bony areas, and supports proper alignment. Whether it’s air, gel, foam, or a hybrid, each type has its pros and cons. Take the time to trial options and seek professional advice—it’s worth it.
The Importance of Good Posture Support
Seating goes hand in hand with the cushion. Your posture affects everything: breathing, digestion, and skin integrity. I’ve had to make sure my seating system keeps me upright, stable, and well-positioned. Even minor adjustments in angle of backrest, Pressure of the Cushion, Body Weight, height of footrests and angle of leg-rests can cause major problems.
Cushion care matters
Maintaining the cushion is just as important as choosing it. I check mine daily—monitoring air pockets, inspecting for wear or leaks. A neglected cushion is a risk I can’t afford, and cushions were not made to last forever, so may need to be replaced from time to time.
After three decades, I’ve learned that the right cushion, proper seating, and consistent pressure management aren’t luxuries—they’re essential to staying healthy and living life on my terms.
